The ‘Strengthening Institutional Capacity for SDGs Achievement in Bangladesh’ (SC4SDG) Project of UNDP Bangladesh and UNEP-PEA in collaboration with the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) and UNICEF Bangladesh organized a 2-day long training workshop on “SDG Metadata and SDMX Template: Exercise on SDG Indicator 16.7.1” at the InterContinental Dhaka during 01-02 November 2020. The training brought together a group of 35 participants from different line ministries/ divisions/institutions.

The training workshop was inaugurated by Mr. Mohammad Yamin Chowdhury, Secretary, Statistics and Informatics Division (SID), Ministry of Planning. Mr. Ashekur Rahman, Assistant Resident Representative, Democratic Governance, UNDP Bangladesh; Mr. Mekonnen Woldegorgis, Chief, SPEAR Section, UNICEF Bangladesh and Mr. Mohammad Tajul Islam, Director General (Additional Secretary), Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) were also present at the opening session of the training workshop.

The workshop represented an opportunity to enhance participants’ knowledge of the main concepts and methodology for generating data for SDG indicator 16.7.1– “Proportions of positions in national and local institutions, including (a) the legislatures; (b) the public service; and (c) the judiciary, compared to national distributions, by sex, age, persons with disabilities and population groups”. The training also facilitated hands-on sessions on the interpretation of the indicator, compilation of administrative data from government organizations, and developing SDMX for SDG indicator 16.7.1.

Ms. Mariana Neves, Governance Statistics Specialist, United Nations Development Programme, Oslo Governance Centre took a virtual session in debunking the metadata of SDG indicator 16.7.1, make a clear direction about numerators and denominators, and gave examples of computation for generating data for the indicator. Other national resource persons delivered lectures regarding conceptualization and understanding of the indicator.

The overall goal of the training workshop was to increase awareness of SDG indicator 16.7.1 and enhance the knowledge and capacity of key stakeholders, including government representatives and statisticians, on the monitoring and reporting process of this indicator. At the end of the workshop, participants are expected to apply the gained expertise and disseminate the acquired knowledge within their organizations and to other organizations.
