NEWS & EVENTS
22 March 2022

Asia and Pacific countries are amongst the most vulnerable to climate change. UNDP has been supporting governments in Asia and the Pacific region to increasingly integrate climate change concerns into national, sectoral and local level programming as well as in budget and finance policies through the DFID (now FCDO)-supported Climate Proofing Growth and Development (CPGD) programme (2013-2019) and the Government of Sweden supported Strengthening the Governance of Climate Change Finance to Enhance Gender Equality (GCCF) programmes (2017-22; previous phase 2012-16).

Moving forward, to respond to the increasing countries’ need to accelerate the climate finance reform process, the Climate Finance Network (CFN) is being established to serve as a peer-to-peer network and as a knowledge management and technical support facility to support governments and other actors in the ecosystem to identify and scale up climate finance innovations and in their efforts to mobilize and use both public and private climate-responsive resources more effectively.

Through the CFN, UNDP will assist governments in selected Asia-Pacific countries to achieve their aspiration on the SDGs. This will be achieved by stimulating climate finance for adequate climate action to address key challenges to successful NDC implementation. These include lack of access to finance, limited institutional capacity and political will, limited access to reliable data etc.

To roll out the CFN, UNDP convenes a virtual inception workshop from 22 to 24 March 2022 to strategize and plan to harness the momentum in climate finance reforms across governments and mobilization of public, private and blended climate finance.

The workshop will include around 140 participants from Bangladesh, Cambodia, India, Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand, the Pacific (Fiji, Kiribati, Republic of Marshall Islands, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu, Vanuatu), Viet Nam, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Maldives. The participants will be representatives mainly from the government (Ministries of Finance, Planning, Environment, and sector Ministries) with Parliament, development partners, CSOs, think tanks, the private sector, media, and UNDP professionals.
